Here’s what’s Happening at St. Andrew’s Lutheran Palmer
COMMUNITY CARE
We continue to collect donations for the Food Bank at ProJeCt. They are especially in need of boxed cereal, canned sweet corn, and pasta. Note that they have a large donor that provides spaghetti, so they are asking for other types of canned or dry pasta. Food donations can be brought to the church office or left in the bins in the Narthex.
We are also joining with fellow churches that are involved in the 6261 talks to assemble kits for the homeless. We have been asked specifically to collect 100 or more hairbrushes and 100 or more pairs of the small, stretchy, one size fits most knit gloves. Picture for reference below. These gloves often come in black for only $1.50 a pair or so on Amazon, but I attached a picture in color because they were easier to see. The small gloves are often worn 24/7 by the homeless, so these are preferred as they will be eating, sleeping, etc with them on.
NURSERY SCHOOL
The children were visited by some friends of mine on Wednesday. Mr. Beekeeper John and Mrs. Beekeeper Shirley brought a “travel hive” of honeybees for the children to observe, and we learned some interesting facts about bees. We even got to sample two types of honey – a light-colored honey made from spring flowers and the dark summer (buckwheat and goldenrod) honey. Reactions to the two types were split with some liking the light honey and some preferring the dark. Personally, we always have the dark honey at home. We asked John to bring some honey for sale since they came out at no charge. If you are interested, jars of honey can bee found on the shelf by the nursery room. The one-pound jars are $10 and the two-pound jars are $20. There is a small box to leave cash for the honey. John’s hives are located at his family farm in Bangor. Note that it is always recommended to eat local honey, as it contains trace amounts of pollen that can aid in reducing seasonal allergies and it offers more anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties than commercial honey. The Nursery School is also starting a fundraiser selling sensory kits or bins for young children. These are great Christmas presents or a wonderful addition to a grandparent’s home. Sensory play engages the mind in many ways including open-ended creative play, they help to build brain connections and develop the small motor skills needed for future writing through pinching, pouring, grasping. Flyers and sample kits can be found at the Craft Fair and will also be available at church in the coming weeks.
BLUEY at LV Phantoms – October 11th – Reserve your seats now!
Many of our nursery school will be attending a LV Phantoms (hockey) game together on Sunday, October 11th at 1pm. Why? Bluey is coming! Yes, the global phenomenon BLUEY. If you aren’t in the know, Bluey is a cartoon six-year-old blue heeler puppy who, with her younger sister Bingo, transform everyday family life into imaginative adventures. This Australian cartoon even has the endorsement of parents.
BOSCOV’S FRIENDS HELPING FRIENDS – October 21st
SAW is once again offering $5 Discount Shopping Passes for the Boscov’s Friends Helping Friends one day sale on October 21st. With a shopping pass, you will receive 25% off most items in the store. The $5 charge is a donation to SAW – Boscov’s doesn’t take a percentage. Walmart Pharmacy is bringing a convenient immunization clinic to St. Andrew’s on Sunday, October 25th beginning at 10:30am. Available vaccines will be Seasonal Flu (both standard and high dose), Pneumonia, Shingles, RSV, Hepatitis A/B, Tetanus, and Covid. All interested parties must sign up ahead of time. Please see a member of the Parish Nurses team on Sunday mornings after worship in the Narthex for further information and/or to sign up. It is imperative that we know the number of each immunization needed ahead of time so that the team from Walmart (headed by our own Michael Stutz) can bring the proper supplies. You will need to remember your insurance card and the completed consent form which can be obtained on Sunday mornings. To clarify, the cost of immunizations will go through your insurance. Depending upon your insurance, immunizations MAY be free. If you are interested in immunizations and unable to pay, speak with Pastor Neel.
SAW BUS TRIP – November 17th – Only Five Seats Remaining!
